School Farm
School Farm is more than just a farm! As well as our arable agricultural activities, we are the base for the employee owned scientific instrumentation company Cairn Research Ltd and we also host the studios for the Radio Faversham Community Interest Company, so all in all this is quite a busy place!
We’re just a mile or so to the east of the town, on the Graveney Road, and barely half that distance away from the M2 to London and the A299 to the Thanet towns, so although we are out in the country we do nevertheless have some excellent transport links. Here you can get news both about the activities of the farm itself, and of the key activities of both Cairn and the radio station, although they have their own websites as well of course.
Chairman’s Blog
One of the old features we had on the Cairn website was the “Chairman’s blog”, which I started over a decade ago when the Company was still in my personal ownership, so the content was often written from that perspective, and sometimes with my tongue fairly firmly in my cheek. But now that Cairn is employee owned I am no longer in such a unique position there, whereas the farm is still very much under my despotic personal control. So to reflect those changed circumstances we’ve transferred that archive to form part of the new “Landlord’s Blog”.
Those old posts were fun to write, and they also recorded a fair amount of both my personal and Cairn history, which it will be nice to be able to refer to from time to time in my more recent Cairn and other postings, as well as perhaps being a continuing source of general entertainment in their own right. But here the landlord can continue to post from a more strictly personal point of view, so he hates to think whatever that may lead to! Enjoy if you can, but you will also continue to find some more formal postings and other information from me on both the Cairn website and on my LinkedIn page.
Radio Faversham
Yes, Faversham has its very own radio station, and since 2021 it has been based at its own studios at the farm, so how did THAT happen? Well, Martin has long had interests in radio, and is likely to tell more about that in future blogs, but the basic story is that he was invited as a guest on one of the station’s programmes on a couple of occasions when it was based at the West Faversham Community Centre. However, the studio facilities there were very cramped and noisy, and then following a refit they became even more cramped and noisy, so he saw that the station could clearly do with something rather better.
